There aren’t enough mindless action games anymore. Now before you start scrolling down the page to leave a comment containing the list of about fifty recent games. I mean the old school, top down, infinite ammo, forgot-to-add-a-story kind of games. With tons of satisfying over the top explosions by shooting those poorly organised red barrels that litter the levels, some huge bosses that fill half the screen and most importantly all the lovely weaponry. Well Total Recoil sets to bring all of that to the PS Vita.

Gameplay:
You start off this twin stick shooter as a lowly Army Private, one of the good guys! The pace is gradual and eases you in nicely. Your aim is simple, kill all the enemies, obliterate the boss and blow stuff up along the way. Now the enemies arrive in waves and only after you’ve destroyed them can you advance to the next section. You can eventually unlock different weapons in the shop and upgrade them, which is addictive.

I quickly got the flamethrower and upgraded it obsessively, now you have to reload your ammo but have an infinite supply so you can keep that finger on the trigger. You can change your equipped item at any time and use a kill streak if the bar has filled up enough to unlock them. They are upgradable as well and can be very effective in wiping out the enemies.

Then there are the Medipacks, Shields and Invincibility that can be bought in the shop and used during battle. I didn’t bother with these too much as I prefer to hoard my coins for the weapons or upgrades.

You get coins from destroying things in the levels and I became obsessed with collecting every single one of these and even went back to earlier levels just grind some more lovely gold pieces. Now the more I played this game, the more I realised that it’s deceptively deep. So many things to upgrade or unlock, challenges to complete and areas to open up. It isn’t a huge game, but there is plenty to do.

Visuals:
A nice looking game which is identical to the phone versions with the small exception of the amazing Vita screen making it look very crisp and clear. It definitely isn’t pushing the hardware in any way, but for the price of this game, I don’t care. I never got lost in the action and the enemies look good, especially the bosses. Scenery gets recycled  from one level to the next and it’s understandable when you look at the file size of this game, go on, have a look at the top of this page, I’ll wait.

Audio:
It features the voice of Tony the Tiger, you know, the one from the Kelloggs Frosties (UK) adverts. It’s great to hear such a fitting voice for this game. The music sounds like a 90’s action film, with the buzz from your chain gun rattling away as explosions send enemies screaming to their death, but in a fun way.

Online/Multiplayer:
This game is single player only.

Conclusion:
I’m so glad I don’t have to review mobile phone games as whilst those versions are somewhat playable and competent, you just can’t beat the dual stick controls on the Vita. It’s the best version by far and for such a good price, you’d be mad not to grab this. It’s a fun game which you’ll plan to just have one quick go and spend the next hour playing as you upgrade those awesome weapons.

Score:
8.5
